According to reports from Evan Petzold, a Detroit Free Press reporter, the Detroit Tigers have optioned first baseman and 2020 No. 1 draft pick Spencer Torkelson to Triple-A.
To replace Torkelson, the Detroit Tigers will call up third baseman Justyn-Henry Malloy.
Torkelson has struggled at the plate this season, posting a slash line of .201/.266/.330 with four home runs, 18 RBIs, and 56 strikeouts in 54 games.
The first baseman has been unable to replicate the success he had in the 2023 season when he hit 31 home runs and drove in 94 runs in 159 games.
The Detroit Tigers also sent Torkelson to the minors during his rookie season in 2022. At that time, he finished the season with a batting average of .203 and eight home runs.
Malloy has posted an OPS of .883 with six home runs and 27 RBIs in Triple-A.
