For the fifth time in their history, the Pittsburgh Pirates hit seven home runs in a single game to defeat the New York Mets 14-2.
Paul Skenes delivered a standout performance, limiting the Mets to four hits and two runs. The right-handed pitcher has struck out seven or more batters in 9 of his first 10 starts, the highest such figure for a pitcher in their first 10 career games.
Bryan Reynolds and Rowdy Tellez made history as the first teammates in MLB history to each hit multiple home runs, including a grand slam, in the same game. Reynolds also tied his personal record with six RBIs in a game. Reynolds is currently in excellent form, having previously recorded a 25-game hitting streak in June.
The New York Mets matched their franchise record for most home runs allowed in a game. Mets captain Francisco Lindor addressed the media: “I don’t like losing, I hate losing. But it’s just one game. We have to find a way to come back tomorrow and play better.”
The four-game series between the Mets and Pirates continues Saturday with a matchup between David Peterson and Bailey Falter.
