Jarren Durán, Isaac Paredes, and Andrés Muñoz will be part of the American League roster for the All-Star Game, joining a select list of Mexicans who have participated in this midseason classic.
The first Mexican to take part in the All-Star Game was Beto Ávila in 1952. The Veracruz native played second base for the American League representing the Cleveland Indians. In that game, Ávila contributed with a hit and an RBI. He was subsequently selected again for the All-Star Game in 1954 and 1955.
Fernando Valenzuela stands out as Mexico’s most talented player in history. Nicknamed “El Toro,” he holds the record for the most All-Star Game appearances by a Mexican, making six consecutive selections from 1981 to 1986. Valenzuela is remembered for striking out notable figures such as Don Mattingly, Cal Ripken Jr., Jesse Barfield, Lou Whitaker, and Teddy Higuera in his final appearance.
In recent years, several Mexican players have made significant contributions to Mexican baseball history. In 2022, Alejandro Kirk made history as the first Mexican catcher to be selected for an All-Star Game.
In 2023, Cuban-Mexican player Randy Arozarena led the voting as the starting outfielder for the American League, joining Jorge Orta as the only Mexicans to play in the All-Star Game in that position.
