Several executives from the 24 MLB teams believe that Alex Bregman of the Astros would be the most attractive to look for in free agency if Astros doesn’t find their way into the postseason.
MLB.com journalist Mark Feinsand published information this Monday that he had gathered over the past few days. He consulted with “two dozen” executives from various MLB teams about their plans for the trade deadline, the players they were targeting as reinforcements for the second half of the season, and how they planned to strengthen their teams for the postseason race. He revealed that 16 players were mentioned, but the most frequently mentioned was Astros third baseman Alex Bregman.
The Houston Astros have struggled this year which is surprising because they have been fighting for the World Series in the last years and they were top candidates to win the championship at the beginning of the season. Despite all that, Astros have improved in recent weeks leaving the last place of the West Division in the American League and they are close to the Seattle Mariners that is four games ahead at the top of the division. Astros have won 9 of the last 11 and before Sunday, they had a streak of six consecutive games with victory.
The improvement of Houston Astros can stop negotiations with other teams that would like to have Bregman in their roster.
An executive mentioned to Mark that if Houston Astros are out of possibilities to enter to the postseason, Alex Bregman will likely be opened to arrive to another team.
One of the main problems for the Astros during the first month of the season was the significant absences of their most renowned starting pitchers, including Justin Verlander, Framber Valdez, Luis García, and José Urquidy, all due to injuries. Some of them have started to return. While this was the most prominent issue, some of the bats were also not delivering in crucial moments, and Bregman was one of them.
This season Alex Bregman has a .225 as batting average with 4 HR and 19 RBI. Nevertheless, Bregman’s numbers have improved in the same way as the team because last week he had a batting average of .360 with 3 HR. and 6 RBI.
