The New York Mets are improving their bullpen ahead of the 2024 trade deadline. They’ve agreed to a trade to acquire right-handed pitcher Ryne Stanek from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for minor league outfielder prospect Rhylan Thomas.
Ryne Stanek, 33, has been having a solid season with the Mariners, posting a 4.38 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP over 46 appearances. He has also recorded 44 strikeouts in 39.0 innings pitched, successfully converting all 11 save opportunities.
This move was driven by two key factors. First, the Mets recently lost pitcher Dedniel Nuñez to the injured list due to an elbow strain. At the same time, the Mariners acquired Yimi García from the Toronto Blue Jays, giving them the flexibility to trade a reliever, in this case, Ryne Stanek.
The trade comes just hours after the Mets placed Dedniel Núñez on the injured list due to an elbow strain, and following a report from Martino on Friday that the Mets are “all in” at this trade deadline.
Ryne Stanek is the second reliever the Mets have acquired this season, following the trade for right-handed pitcher Phil Maton from the Tampa Bay Rays earlier in July. Both pitchers played several years with the Houston Astros, including during their 2022 World Series-winning season.
