Ben Rice is a promising 25-year-old prospect standing 6’1″ and weighing 215 pounds. Drafted in the 12th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, Rice did not initially draw significant attention. However, his position as a catcher, an area the Yankees were looking to strengthen in their minor league system, was promising.

Since his debut in the Rookie League in 2021, Rice has steadily climbed the ranks of the Yankees’ minor league system, reaching Triple-A in 2024. His impressive performance has earned him the 12th spot in the Yankees’ top 30 prospects according to MLB Pipeline. Primarily a catcher, Rice has also played first base over the past two seasons, following the Yankees’ recommendation to increase his versatility. This adaptability could expedite his path to the Major Leagues.

Rice’s minor league statistics highlight his offensive prowess. Over 215 games, he has posted a batting line of .286/.399/.534, with 143 runs, 211 hits, 40 doubles, 1 triple, 47 home runs, 150 RBIs, 119 walks, 171 strikeouts, and 25 stolen bases in 738 at-bats.

A left-handed hitter, Rice is known for his power, which he demonstrated with 15 home runs and a .976 OPS in Double-A in 2024. After being promoted to Triple-A, he continued to excel, hitting 3 home runs and 7 RBIs, including 2 doubles, in just three games. Despite being considered inexperienced defensively at first base, his progress has not gone unnoticed. His role as catcher for veteran Gerrit Cole during a Double-A rehab start showcased his capabilities, contributing to his promotion to Triple-A.

While Anthony Rizzo’s defensive skills at first base are crucial for the Yankees, Ben Rice is seen as a viable option if Rizzo becomes unavailable due to injury or other reasons.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone has expressed confidence in Rice’s potential, stating, “I think he’s a true hitter. I think the organization sees him that way. He’s someone we believe has the potential to be really good.”

With scouts indicating that 2024 could be the year for Rice’s Major League debut, he remains a prospect to watch closely.
