The two time Home Run Derby champions, Pete Alonso, has confirmed his participation for the Home Run Derby 2024 and joins Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson and Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm as confirmed participants with more names to be revealed before the event.
Will Pete Alonso Secure His Third Title?
Alonso, who won the event in 2019 and 2021 (there was no competition in 2020), was a favorite in 2023 but was defeated by Seattle Mariners’ Julio Rodriguez in the first round. There was speculation that Alonso might decline the invitation due to the taxing nature of the competition, which can have lasting effects throughout the season—something not ideal for Alonso as he prepares to enter free agency for the first time in his career.
The reigning Home Run Derby champion is Toronto Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr., also selected for the All-Star Game, though he has yet to confirm if he will defend his title.
