The day after the report, manager Mark Kotsay addressed the media, asserting that the Athletics organization is not known for lying or misleading its fans. He confirmed that Miller’s injury did indeed result from him hitting a table, not from sleeping improperly, as the agent suggested.
Mark Kotsay stated, “The agent of Mason might have had a different thought and made his own statement. The way we do things in this organization is to tell the truth. Mason came into the training room and was going through his recovery. He was reminded that he had a post-game lift to go to. Out of a bit of frustration, he simply hit his fist on a padded training table out of emotion,” Kotsay explained.
“All of us have been there, done that. Unfortunately, this resulted in a fracture in his non-pitching hand, in the pinky area of his left hand,” Kotsay concluded on Thursday, as reported by ESPN.
“How we do things here in this organization, we tell the truth.”
This is true of Mark Kotsay but hilarious to claim when applied to the club at large. pic.twitter.com/AwxXfDNyvL

The situation is undoubtedly frustrating for all parties involved, as the Oakland Athletics are now without a key player with the trade deadline approaching on July 30, even if they did not anticipate trading him. Miller, known for his 100+ mph fastball, has been having a stellar season with 70 strikeouts in 40.2 innings, a 2.21 ERA, and 15 saves.
This incident once again highlights that agents may sometimes make statements that are not entirely truthful in an effort to protect their clients. In this case, however, Mark Kotsay made sure the truth came to light.
