The Home Run Derby has been known as one of the most captivating events during MLB’s All-Star weekend, often overshadowing the All-Star Game itself. This year, the format has been revamped. Previously, eight batters were divided into four quarterfinal matchups, with winners advancing to semifinals and then the final. However, this season, the initial round will see all eight players competing in a round-robin format, with the top four advancing based on overall performance to the semifinals.
Pete Alonso, a two-time Home Run Derby champion, is the top favorite according to betting odds to win this edition. This marks his fifth participation in the All-Star festivities, aiming to match Ken Griffey Jr.’s record of three derby wins.
Adolis García, the Cuban outfielder, is the second favorite, seeking redemption after being eliminated in the first round of the previous derby. Competing at home in the Globe Life Field, García will have strong support from the local fans.
In addition to seasoned players like Alonso and García, young talents such as Gunnar Henderson and Bobby Witt Jr. are also expected to make an impact in this year’s derby. Teoscar Hernández and Alec Bohm will debut in this home run festival.
