After a challenging start to the season, the Houston Astros have shown significant improvement over the past month. As of June 18th, the Seattle Mariners led the division with a ten-game advantage over the Astros, boasting a record of 44-31. Since then, the Mariners have struggled, going 8-17, while the Astros have surged with an impressive 19-6 record.
Both teams entered Saturday’s game tied for the lead in the American League West division, making the matchup crucial for both franchises.
With a two-run homer by Jake Meyers in the seventh inning, the Houston Astros took sole possession of the division lead for the first time this season.
After contributing to his team’s victory, Meyers mentioned that the Astros are regaining their winning mentality and should continue on this path: “I think we’ve gotten back to that philosophy and mindset that used to bring us success. We need to keep working to win one game at a time and play as a team. We’re a very dangerous team with that philosophy.”
The Houston Astros have clinched three consecutive American League West division titles and six of the last seven.
In contrast, the Seattle Mariners have not won a division title since 2001.
The Mariners‘ chances of winning the division have dropped from 86.3% on June 18th to just 41.7%.
Following the team’s recent struggles, Mariners manager Scott Servais remarked, “This team is going through a lot of things. It’s normal to have rough patches throughout the season. We have players who are battling at the plate and in the field. They feel it themselves. And when you add to that the fact that the other team is doing things well, it’s normal for them to catch up to us. We need to keep working to regain our best form.”
