The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired utility player Cavan Biggio from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for right-handed reliever Braydon Fisher, a minor league pitcher, according to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.

Cavan Biggio was designated for assignment last weekend after hitting just .200/.323/.291 (80 OPS+) in 44 games. However, the 29-year-old Biggio has shown himself to be an effective hitter in the past. Over six Major League seasons, he has compiled a batting line of .227/.343/.382 (101 OPS+) with 48 home runs and 32 stolen bases. He has exhibited a strong ability to draw walks, reaching base via walk in nearly 14% of his career plate appearances.

This season, Biggio’s impact has decreased. His average exit velocity of 82 mph represents a 5 mph drop from last year. Clearly, the Dodgers believe in their ability to help Biggio rediscover his power stroke.

It remains to be seen how Cavan Biggio will fit into the Dodgers’ plans. Los Angeles’ roster includes no fewer than three underperforming infielders: veterans Chris Taylor and Enrique Hernández, both right-handed hitters, as well as left-handed hitter Gavin Lux. Notably, of these three, Lux is the only one who can be optioned to the minors. Lux missed all of last season due to a knee injury suffered in spring training, which might explain his struggles to find his rhythm this year.

As of Wednesday, the Dodgers had a 42-26 record for the year, giving them a 7.5-game lead in the National League West. The Blue Jays, on the other hand, had a 33-34 record as of Wednesday, leaving them two games away from a wildcard spot in the American League.
